yah00geek asked:
I bought a car in Massachussetts private sale. I need to get it registered in Connecticut. In order to get it registered, I need to have the title, insurance, and bill of sale. In order to get the bill of sale and the title, I have to pay for the car. After I pay for the car, can I drive it to Connecticut to get it registered as long as I keep the title and bill of sale in my car? The only other alternative is to drive to Mass, pick up the title and the bill of sale, drive back to Connecticut, get it registered, then drive back to Mass to pick up the car again. This seems like a waste of time, but on the other hand I don’t want to get in trouble for driving an unregistered car – even if it is only for a couple of hours. I cannot find information on how to do this legally! Please help!

If you bought it from a dealer, you would get a temporary paper plate good for 30 days. If you bought it from a private party there is no such mechanism. Some states will issue a temporary permit to move a vehicle, check to see if your state will. If not, you can’t drive a car without registration and insurance. You could hire a tow company to bring it home for you though.
ego to the dmv in conn, give then the vin # and start the paperwork they will take your money and give you a moving permit to get the car back to mass. once your back in mass with the car , go back to the dmv and finish the paperwork,
MA doesn’t have temp tags, not sure about CT. If there are no temps in CT, you’ll have to get it registered and insured before you can drive it.
I can speak from experience on MA, you WILL get an expensive ticket AND your car will be impounded.
If it’s still legally registered to the seller, you could drive it home on his or her tags and send them back to them but that’s about it.
