I am considering a career change and looking towards new or used car sales. Wanted to get some feedback, positive or negative, of the car salesman career. I have worked in the Auto industry for some time and just believe my background information in the industry would be a huge advantage in selling vehicles.

Most car salesmen get paid on commission. So unless you are a very good salesman I wouldn’t. Also, during some months like December(when people are buying Christmas presents instead of cars) you may not get a lot of business or money.

Car sales is a good career because dealerships usually offer paid training and good benefits. If you are good, the pay is good too. Also, the high turnover of sales people would reward those willing to stay through down times and the good, all the while accruing better benefits such as more vacation time, higher profit sharing vesting, and benefits from seniority such as a better office and a promotion to a level that includes or increases a fixed income.

Having a good working knowledge of the vehicles will really help if you can explain how the different mechanical features work and therefore how that car’s features are improvements over the previous or competing models.

One other thing you will need to sell cars is being able to talk to most people without bias. The more people you can accept based on their race, status symbols, tattoos, etc, the more customers you will have.

The last thing is your level of honesty will probably be the key to how well you get along with your coworkers. If you can honestly answer questions about the car you are selling, you will do better with the manager that gets the bad feedback on the other guy. If you don’t promise too much, you won’t rub against your manager who reviews your deals or the departments (i.e. parts, make ready) that have to keep your promises.

It really depends on your personality. As a car salesman you only get paid commission and it’s pretty low unless you have a certain number of sales then they up your percentage a little bit. On a new vehicle to get the numbers a dealership will sell for $500 over wholesale to get the number… on a used car the commission is much higher as is the mark up ( your commission is not based on the price of the car, it’s on the mark up ). You would think the product would sell itself….. Not true people shop around and dealerships want you to sell on inpulse get the person in a contract while they are excited so they don’t have time to think about it. Your background may help but it doesn’t matter with the training you get on selling the car it’s pretty much the same things you point out with each vehicle with a couple of exceptions. Plus when you are selling to a woman or man or a couple with or without kids they have different selling points. If you can financially afford o take this leap of faith go for it. But being a car salesman is about personality and it is a hustle, you will not sell a car everyday. Good luck

Yes, I’m sure it can be. You need to ask yourself if you can be passionate about the job day after day. And can you look in the mirror each morning and say, ” yes, I feel good about my job and how I’m doing in it.” I would think it would be an interesting profession, fun, and exciting as you will meet people constantly. Good luck!
