    Tough question.

You must decide: You may be a car salesman or a good salesman, you can“t be both!!!

I was in car sales. You have to be friendly and let the customer talk. One thing I learned is that the customer will tell you everything you need to know to sell them. Ask minimal questions. 2 door or 4 door, work or play or both? car, truck, or Suv? Have kids? Always agree with the customer, eye contact is esential. Even if they are wearing sunglasses look them directly where their eyes are, more times than not they will take off the sunglasses. Just email me and I will tell you everything you need to know. I have studied Zig Zigler and Joe Verde who are car sales guru’s. When I left the lot where I was working I was selling Chevrolet Avalanches at or above sticker with accesories. You absolutely have to know your product. Product is key in any selling position.

I was top car sales for 3 years in the late 1980 and I don’t think much has changed. Sales are Sales.
First: used cars have a higher mark up and you make a bigger commision than on new ones.
You can make a good salery selling cars but the rule is 80%of the money is made by less than 20% of the sales force. So it is important to be in the top percentages.
Understand that buying a new car is a shopping experience, and people like to shop. don’t invite your friends in on a weekend, as that is best avenue to make your most money. If a friend wants your time to test drive or car, or waste your time talking trucks, then have them come in during the week when it is slow.
My husband also sold cars and we met at the dealership. His trick was to bring donuts to the girls in the back office, the ones who answer the phones and give out the calls to the floor. (ups) When someone called for just anybody, because George brought the ladies donuts and was very nice, he got the calls. No one ever caught on.
I made a deal with the people in the repair section to give them a kickback from my commission to anyone who they sent my way while fixing their car.
The stores like Ford and chevy have contests every weekend sponsored by the factory. they would give out extra money for certain cars and had what was called “spiffs” or bonus money that could be won. We used to get a lot of money from that. ( know about trucks, and remember a truck is the only car a guy can buy without his wife present. When the wife is present always sell the wife and never flirt)
also remember this rule: Nobody cares what you know, untill they know that you care.
People who come shopping want to buy a car, the idea is to make them want to buy it from you. they dont’ care that you need money or college tuition or anything else, they just care that they want a car, a deal, and to be able to buy it. If you keep the conversation on them, and not on you, your sales will improve.( some of my best sales were because I found relative in the family of the buyer to co-sign on the note, even 2 or 3 states away.)
Get Ziz Ziglers tapes on selling as this will help a lot. I used to listen to them on the way to work. When you have 27 sales people on the floor at once, and you get the most cars out or are among the top three every month, you are doing the right thing. So trust me when I say, every body wants to own a car, or buy something, and as a sales person you are like a priest offering absolution for the purchase. People need a reason to feel good about the car and about your dealership.
Also I never asked my freinds to buy a car, but I did ask everyone to help me find someone who wanted one. What this does is get all you freinds as talent scouts for you, and off the hook themselves. People will really try to help.
YOU asked about salery, and that depends on the dealership, and if you are in the top 20 percent. most car stores pay minimum wage plus commison, but if they have to pay base wages often they will fire you.
Lastly, the people who make the best money are in F&I.(Finance) So if you have good people skills, dress well (oh, really dress well) they seem to have the best incomes from what I can see.

A lot of these are great answers, and i dont want to repeat anything, just add a little something…. never, never, and i do mean NEVER tell the customer you want to make a career out of selling cars. That makes you sound like a professional crook. People will give you more of a chance if you tell them you are new.
