Rita K asked:

I am wanting to become a sales man at one of my local cadillac, gm, or pontiac car lots around my area. What does it take? Do I need any certain schooling, or do I just go to them, get an application, and they train me if I get hired? Is there anything else important I should know? Thanks!

You should know about the cars you will be selling and the company you will be selling for…

they train you on the spot. all you need to do is lie to customers and become cut throat because if you dont sell cars you dont get paid. but if you can do that you will do great. good luck maybe ill buy my next caddy from you

Most dealers will train you, assuming they are willing to hire someone with no experience. Normally, you would work with an experienced salesperson for a while, then work on your own. It’ll take a while, maybe a year, before you start making decent money.

Many dealers don’t like to train new people because they know you’ll change jobs soon. They don’t want to make the investment in someone who they are pretty sure won’t stay with them. It’s easier to just hire someone with experience.

First ask yourself if you are a people person who can handle being rejected 80% of the time. Then ask yourself if you can live on a commission only paycheck. No sales = no paycheck.

Love of cars is a great tool but you need to be prepared to convince others that your product is the best there is.

Remember that asking someone to spend 30 or 40K is a hard thing to do.

Go to the dealership and observe the salesmen that are already there. Are they energetic or are they just hanging around in clusters smoking and looking bored.

Ask the Sales Manager or General Manager if they are hiring Salespeople and Get an application.

If you are serious it would probably help you to get the brochures of each car that the dealership sells and commit much of the information to memory so you can have a seamless discussion of the car and its features with someone who would be asking questions. Practice with a friend.

If they decide to take you on they will train you.

Dress professionally when you go in to talk to them and NEVER forget to make eye contact during your interview.

Some experience would be good. The big box stores (best buy/circuit city) are good stepping stones for sales.

I started life selling used cars and then went to new cars and then into management. General Manager was a lot of fun and paid well. I also did dealer consulting.

Find a chain of dealerships. They offer professional training and even a salary while training.

How well you do will depend on how expert you become at qualifying, demonstration and closing. Networking is important.

There is no reason for people to speak derogatorily about car salesmen. Many of us raised families, working crazy hours listening to liars posing as customers.

I can’t think of one profession that doesn’t have incompetents.

People go into dealerships without any information and expect the salesman to sort out what is in their mind.
