Tell me your opinions. Tell me about an experience you had buying a car from a dealership?
It’s amazing how much mis-information there is even after the internet offers everything.
I would say that 90% of them are too pushy and are a put off. We recently bought a car from Carr Subaru in Oregon. It was really awesome. I highly recommend them.
I have worked in the industry for the past 10 yrs as a cosmetics specialists. I don’t work for dealers but service their cars as my own company.
Most issues that customers have with salesmen the customer creates. Most assume the salesmen is there to rip them off, take them for a ride, sell them a bridge, et. When in fact that type of saleman is only about 3% of all the salesmen out there. If I walked into your job and started to call you names, put you down, say you are a liar, cheat, etc and that you won’t rip me off….how should I expect you to treat me during the next 15 mins we talk and look at cars? exactly!!
Anymore most are not paid on commision basis like the old days that created this image of car salesmen. But rather most today are paid a flat salary and then a flat bonus per unit they sell. Meaning if the dealership profits $500 or $5000 they only get a flat $50 bonus for the sale on top of their small salary.
This stops the salesmen from trying to jack the price up to sell you items you don’t want so he makes a bigger commision. Now the salesmen just cares about selling the car, cheaper hopefully to get it to sell faster. Cause now he is wanting to sell many cars for his bonus over selling a few for his big commisions.
People in general have a bad image of car dealers that just isn’t right. Did you know that almost all dealers are huge charity contributors? They sponsor many other items in their towns as well plus put up all the money to put on the anual new car shows in each town.
Average salary of a car salesmen is only 30-60k per year now. The days of 300k a year salesmen are long gone.
Give the guy a break….he probalby was flipping burgers just last week prior to this new sales job….least he is trying.
And a last note about dealers…..did you know that the average profit per used car sold is only $1100. And this money has to pay everyone, the mechanic, the building, electric, taxes, insurance, etc. New car profit is even less as most of that money is made by rebates the dealer gets from the manufacturer for selling a certain number of units. Its why you are seeing 0% financing. Dealers weren’t selling cars to get their rebates to make their money so they had to talk to the banks about doing lower financing rates. Its in the banks interest to do it as the bank owns the cars…after all its all on loan.
ALL used car salesmen are liars. They are usually trained very well to sell you a car. They can ALWAYS sell you a car cheaper. Never ever ever ever pay sticker price. Their job is to stop you from offering a lower and lower price. Their job is to make you feel good about the price you paid. “Well, i’m gona get in trouble, but I can take another $100 off the price.” After I ask for their best price and say I will pay cash, I can usually get another $3000 of the price.
But, you can’t **** the person, you have to **** the job.
Car salesmen have a reputation of being pushy, as they are paid on a commission basis. They’re fighting for your business to get more money for themselves.
When I bought my current car, I found it on the website at 3:30pm in the afternoon on a Saturday. Test drove it at 4:15pm, and we were negotiating at 4:45pm. The dealership closed at 5:00pm, but we negotiated until 5:30pm, and everyone was happy. After all that, I discovered the salesman was the father of a former colleague of mine… it’s a small world!
The best tip I have for people is: Know what you are looking for, and go for it. Don’t be bullied into buying a car that isn’t right for you.
First of all, all salesmen still work on commission. Meaning they don’t make any money if they don’t sell. This is why they don’t want to waste their time with “tire kickers” who aren’t going to buy that day. The only dealers I know that work on salary is Carmax and Saturn. And a few scattering of dealers around the country. But majority still work on commission only.
Secondly, all salesmen are indeed crooks. They can be nice, mean, pushy, whatever… but the bottom line is, they want you to pay a higher price since it’s tied to their commission. If a clueless person comes in and offers to pay MSRP, even though they’ve been selling at $5k off, will the salesman stop them? HELL NO!
Thirdly. Why should salesmen ever make more than $100 per car? I mean all they’re doing is riding with you on a 15 min test drive. So you think you deserve to become rich doing that? Give me a break. If you don’t like it, go to school, get a degree and a real job.
Lastly, dealers make millions every year. How would they do that supposedly making $1100 per used car? Because they are making far more than that. They have something like a 400% profit margin on used cars because they buy em dirt cheap at dealer only auctions and lowball trade-ins. I’ve had them offer $100 on a trade-in once… I sold it on my own for $2000.
Plus they make more on servicing cars and ripping customers off with overpriced aftermarket crap such as paint protectant, alarm, Lojack, etc.
If you feel sorry for car salesmen…. read this article, you won’t feel such sympathy for them any longer….
